"Clean your room!" just plain takes too long. We solved our room cleaning problems with daily room chores...done in the morning right after breakfast and just before learning time.
Room chores are divided by sections to make it quicker and saner (is that a word?). Monday's room chore is "Tidy the Closet". Everything in the closet is put in order. The empty hangers are searched for and brought to the front of the clothes so I can pick them up easily and bring them to the laundry room if needed.
Their boxes to organize their toys and stuff are labeled so we check those quickly to make sure everything is where it belongs.
The biggest lesson for me in doing the room chores is that they need to be inspected and I need to be consistent. It is amazing how a couple weeks of not inspecting rooms chores can lead to a messy, disorganized room.
Whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.~ Colossians 3:17

Seriously Lisa, is a closet really supposed to look like that? You should submit your photos to a magazine or something!
Oh boy, we have a lot to do before we start our daily chores :-)
Consistency...something I need to work on. Blessings!
Michelle, they do look nice in a photo. In real life you can see all the stuff smooshed in the boxes. Remember....photos on blogs can be deceiving. :-)
Great idea to divide a big chore into smaller tasks. I need to do that more often--and incorporate my children into the job as well.
