Caitlin decided that since Chinyere gave her a hand sewn gift that she would like to sew something for Chinyere's birthday. We decided on a tote bag for Chinyere's 18" doll Marissa. Caitlin picked out the fabric; a beautiful turquoise with green, yellow and pink flowers, pink lining and pink webbing for the straps.
She helped with the laying out, cutting, ironing, sewing and putting the elastic in. I don't think I have ever heard so many "I love you, Mommy."s in one morning.
"Thank you for teaching me to iron, Mommy. This is so much fun. I love you."
"I love you, Mommy. Thank you for helping me learn to sew."
"Mommy, thank you for being my mommy. I love you."
We had a fun and productive (and long) morning in the studio. We made a felt flower pin and attached it to the tote bag.
Chinyere loved her gift. Caitlin admitted that she was a tiny bit jealous and would like one of her own. The next time around she will be able to do a little more of the sewing. Hopefully, there will be just as many "I love you"s. That made the task at hand very rewarding.
