We had been to the MIA on Friday but it was sold-out. I told Caitlin and Joshua that we missed it and they were so sad. There were tickets left for Sunday so we purchased them and headed back into Minneapolis after Sunday's Gathering for worship.
Caitlin commented halfway through the exhibit: "Mom, the scrapbook in my mind of Georgia O'Keeffe is almost complete." She really enjoyed the exhibit. When we got to the end of the exhibit we stopped in front of Red Rose (same as in the poster below) and she just stood in front of it and absorbed it. When I asked her to let me know when she was ready to go she said, "My body says I'm ready but my heart tells me to stay a little longer."
Ahhh...Art. What an effect it has on children. I wish I would have understood its impact more when I was a classroom teacher.

Every six weeks we change the art on our wall to expose our kids to a different artist. Georgia O'Keeffe was the second one we did this school year. We look at one print a week. Read a book or two. Simple. Really.
Sometimes we do some of our own art that imitates the artist's work or style. Joshua picked "Pelvis IV" to paint. When he saw the one that Georgia O'Keeffe painted he said, "Wow, I had no idea it was so big." He was just amazed. . . and proud of himself that he had attempted to paint the same thing. I was proud too.
Artists will always be remembered as long as there are people to appreciate their art. But there is a lesson here beyond appreciating art - What will we do that we will be remembered by one day? How will our children and grandchildren, friends and neighbors remember us? What will our impact be?
May your deeds be shown to your servants,
your splendor to their children.
May the favor of the Lord our God rest upon us;
establish the work of our hands for us—
yes, establish the work of our hands.
~Psalm 90:16, 17

Beautiful job, Joshua! And I love the insightful comment by Caitlin.
Lisa, the way you approach art appreciation is very appealing. I may have to borrow your idea!
We do something similar for music. We choose one composer a month and listen to his music as much as possible. I also try to read a book about his life. We especially like the Mike Venezia books. :-)
Georgia O'Keefe has long been one of my favorite artists. In fact, I have a copy of "Poppies" hanging in my living room.
Hi Lisa!
I'm having coffee with your husband this morning...wish you were here too! It's fun "catching up" on some things with you guys. Next time maybe you can come along...but otherwise I will see you in July!
Love to you,
Sherri
